What is Normal Blood Pressure
The heart is one of the most important organs of the human body. It supplies oxygenated blood to all organs and tissues of the body by ‘pumping’ blood into the arteries with each heartbeat.

When blood is pumped, pressure is created on the walls of the blood vessels due to which blood can easily reach all the organs and tissues of the body. This pressure of blood is known as blood pressure, which is divided into two parts:
What is Systolic blood pressure
This is the pressure that is produced by the beating of the heart. This pressure occurs when the heart muscle contracts and pumps oxygen-rich blood into the arteries.
What is Diastolic blood pressure
This is the pressure on the walls of blood vessels that is produced by the relaxation of the heart muscle. Therefore, it is observed that the diastolic pressure is always less than the systolic pressure. Blood pressure is measured in units of millimeter mercury and the unit is written as mmHg. Blood pressure measurements are always written in pairs, with one value representing the systolic blood pressure value, and the other representing the lower diastolic blood pressure value.
What is normal blood pressure range (BP)
BLOOD PRESSURE CATEGORY | SYSTOLIC mm Hg (upper number) | and/or | DIASTOLIC mm Hg (lower number) |
---|---|---|---|
NORMAL | LESS THAN 120 | and | LESS THAN 80 |
ELEVATED | 120 – 129 | and | LESS THAN 80 |
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION) STAGE 1 | 130 – 139 | or | 80 – 89 |
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION) STAGE 2 | 140 OR HIGHER | or | 90 OR HIGHER |
HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS (consult your doctor immediately) | HIGHER THAN 180 | and/or | HIGHER THAN 120 |
Normal Blood pressure chart by age
Age | Upper Range (Systolic) | Lower Range (Diastolic) |
---|---|---|
Newborn to 6 months | 45-90 | 30-65 |
6 months to 2 years | 80-100 | 40-70 |
Children (2-13 years old) | 80-120 | 40-80 |
